My Trashed Apartment At Chatham Square

On the first day of my second Disney College Program I went through the check-in process, got my room assignment and headed over to my one bedroom apartment at Chatham Square.  I had no idea what I was about to walk in to.

First of all before I arrived at check-in I had made the decision that I wanted a one bedroom apartment or at most a two bedroom.  When it was my turn to get room assignments I asked for a one bedroom and they told me they had no more one bedroom apartments and they also did not have any two bedroom apartments.  They said the only apartments available were either a three or four bedroom apartment.  I really did not want to be in a three or four bedroom apartment.

I politely asked them if there was anything they could do to get me in a one or two bedroom apartment which at first the girl checking me in for room assignments said no but I was persistent and asked her to please check again.  She found a one bedroom apartment in Chatham Square in which there was already one person living there who’s program would be ending in a few days.  I said that would be fine with me.  I got my key, finished the check-in process and headed over to Chatham.

I arrived at Chatham and I figured since there was already someone living there that had no idea they were getting a new roommate I would knock on the door instead of just walking in.  After a couple minutes of no answer I decided to just let myself in.  Now I figured the apartment would be somewhat messy being that the person was leaving in a few days and it was the end of their program but I was totally unprepared for what I was about to walk into.

When I opened the door to my apartment the first thing that hit me was the smell.  I can’t even begin to describe what it smelled like.  If I had to try though I would say it smelled like dirty dishes, alcohol and bad decisions lol.

The entire apartment was completely trashed.  There were beer cans and bottles of liquor everywhere.  I counted multiple cans of 16 different kinds of beer and 13 half drank bottles of different kinds of liquor.  Every surface was covered with beer cans, bottles of liquor and straight up trash.  The mattresses for the beds had been taken off the beds and were in the living room.  The most disgusting thing was the used condom in the trash in the bathroom.

I took it all in and said to myself “welcome to the Disney College Program.”  Being that this was my second Disney Internship I was not as surprised as I would have been if it was my first internship but this was by far the messiest apartment I had ever stepped foot in and it was my new home.

Since my roommate was not home yet I did not want to unpack or move stuff around until he got home just out of respect considering he did not know he was getting a new roommate so I waited.  He was working and got home about four hours later.

When he got home from work I could tell he was thrown off that he got a new roommate a few days before ending his internship.  I was glad to find out that he was at least a nice guy.  He apologized for the mess and said that he had a party the night before and that was why the apartment was so trashed.  Right away he started cleaning up.  He did not clean up a lot but he threw away most of the trash so it was a bit of an improvement.

The next day he informed me that his brother and his brothers girlfriend would be in town to go comic con and would be staying at our apartment over night.  I was not too happy about this because that’s a big no no and could get us both kicked off the Disney College Program which he didn’t care because he was leaving in a couple days anyways.  I rolled with it anyways since they were quiet and not partying there was no reason for security to stop by and check in on what was going on at our apartment.

Friday finally came and was the day he would be checking out.  I was excited because it meant I would have the apartment to myself until I got a new roommate.  I knew that the next set of check in dates were not until the next week so I would definitely have my apartment to myself for at least 5 days.

I had traditions class that day so I was not home while my roommate moved out.  I was again excited because I was planning that after class I would get home to an empty apartment and clean it up really well and have a nice clean apartment to really start me off right.

I had hoped that when my roommate moved out that he would clean up a bit but he did not clean up at all.  He just packed up his stuff and left.  He left old food in the fridge and trash all throughout the apartment.  I had my work cutout for me.

I got home from traditions and spent the next four to five hours cleaning the apartment from top to bottom.  I have to say that when I was done cleaning up the apartment looked brand new.  I did not think it could look so good because of the mess my first roommate had left it in.  It felt really good to have a spotless apartment and I felt like I was finally home.

I ended up getting really lucky and I did not get a new roommate until after three whole weeks.  It was very nice to have those three weeks to settle in to the apartment and the Disney College Program in general.

I was worried that I would get a new roommate who I did not get along with and would be messy.  Not that I am a clean freak by any means but after the effort I went through cleaning the place and how nice it felt that way I wanted to continue to live in a clean environment.  I am easy going and easy to get along with but having a roommate can be tricky.  I know a lot of people who have had bad roommates on the Disney College Program and it really affected how much they enjoyed being on the program.

They day my new roommate arrived I was lucky enough to be home that day because it was one of my days off.  I was just sitting around that day when there was a knock on the door and it was my new roommate.  At first I was a little disappointed because I wanted to continue to have the apartment all to myself but within minutes of his arrival we both new that we would get along just fine.

He turned out to be a really nice guy who had started his program the same day I did but needed to switch apartments because his previous roommate was stalking him and being a real weirdo.  He was on the program with his fiance who lived in the building across the parking lot from our building.  This was great for me too because he spent the majority of his time over there with her.  He even spent most nights at her apartment so I pretty much still had the place to myself and when he was home he was not messy and was overall respectful.

We even got the white glove award which for those of you who don’t know the white glove award is given when the housing people come and inspect your apartment like once every month or so and you pass the inspection with flying colors.

I feel very fortunate to have gotten a good roommate especially after such a frightening start to my housing experience on the Disney College Program.  I never before and still haven’t to this day seen a place as trashed as my apartment at Chatham was when I first arrived.  Sometimes there’s not much you can do about your roommates and not everyone is as lucky as I was but if you stick to what you want when you check in to housing you at least can have some control over the outcome of where you live.
